How-To-Get CAGIS Data

This site only explains the basic steps to access CAGIS data to those who are clueless about Geographic Information Systems. More detailed information and training is available through several courses taught at the School of Planning.

CAGIS is a very comprehensive database consisting of geometrical shapes, aerial views, and text data in form of tables. All information contained is linked to each other, and can be retrieved using ArcView or other GIS applications.

What you need:

- access to the data. All SAID and SOP students are automatically granted access after log-in.

- access to a PC with ArcView (application for data mapping and retrieval) installed. Go to CGC's PC lab.

- a user id and password (BearcatID ) and (MMDD) followed by the last 4 digits of your StudentID.

- patience, lots of it ...

Tutorial One covers:

- how to set up your view

- how to import several layers into ArcView (pavement / buildings / contours / parcels / aerials)

for info regarding of what to find where click Available Data Layers

Tutorial Two covers:

- how to scale your map

- page layout

- how to export your map as either jpg (image file, pixels) or illustrator file (vector lines), which then can be opened in illustrator and converted into a dxf or dmg file for autocad or formz.

Good Luck
