Existing Conditions
Women residing in slums have little access to health care, safe sanitation facilities and clean drinking water. In the community they are often subjected to rape, domestic violence, and abandonment by their spouses. (Source of Image: Sprague Photo Stock)

Planning Communities: Making Third World Women Central to Design
Rafia Usmani (more)

Women in slums around the world lead approximately 30 - 50% of all households and are challenged by their triple role in society: one of caregiver, one of financial supporter, and one of community leader. To assist these women in fulfilling these roles efficiently, the project has been designed to provide communal laundry and kitchen facilities, sanitation facilities, business opportunities, education, training and community centers through the use of urban design.
